BRIAN NOLAN

NEWLY ORDAINED PRIEST AS OF SUNDAY DECEMBER 6TH 2009 AT ST JOSEPH'S DUNDALK.

UPDATE TO FOLLOW SHORTLY.

My connection with the Redemptorists is a lifelong connection.  I grew up in the shadows of our monastery Mount Saint Alphonsus and was always involved in some type of voluntary work around the monastery as I grew up.  During my secondary education at the Redemptorist College, St. Clements I began to consider what it might be like to be a Redemptorist.  My journey was quite simple in that I never approached any other religious orders.  I knew diocesan life would not suit me because I was always drawn to the Redemptorists because of the strong community aspect.  Growing up around the monastery I was always conscious of how much these religious “men in black” seemed to care for each other and enjoy being in each other’s company.  Looking back this was a big factor in my decision to join.

After secondary school I studied a course in Electronic Engineering and worked in that field for a year.  In the summer of 2000 I made a decision to join the Redemptorists and in September 2000 I moved to Marianella (Dublin) and began my Formation. I completed two years of study in Philosophy at the Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy where I obtained a Baccalaureate in Philosophy. After my Philosophy studies I moved to our monastery in Dundalk to begin a spiritual year known as the Novitiate.
On 24th August 2003 I publicly professed my vows of poverty, chastity and obedience in Mount Saint Alphonsus, Limerick. In September 2003 I began a four year course in Theology. I completed two years of theological studies before moving to Belfast, living in Clonard Monastery. I spent two years there and worked in various ministries in Belfast, such as Parish Missions and School Retreats. I am currently in my final year of Theology studies and with God’s help and the support of my family and friends I will profess perpetual vows this year and will be ordained to the priesthood.

Over the past nine years I have been extremely fortunate to have the support and love of my parents, my two brothers and two sisters.  The community at Mount Saint Alphonsus, a few members in particular, were instrumental in helping me discern my vocation, and to them I am extremely grateful.  Beyond family I have a close circle of friends who are extremely supportive of me and of the decision I have made.  Without their constant support I wouldn’t be where I am today.
