REDEMPTORISTS AND THE INTERNET

It is good that we have met on this information highway.

Like you the Redemptorists travel in cyberspace. Perhaps you dwell in hyperspace and long for a sacred space.

THE INTERNET: THE GREAT INFORMATION HIGHWAY

As your fingertips touch your surfing board, may they lead you to quiet pastures and refreshing waters. As you journey ponder these three thoughts:

  • Today we live within a time-warped paradox. We pride ourselves on timesaving technology and yet the time we 'save' is quickly followed up with more to do. And there is never enough time to do what we "have to do".
  • Cyberspace means that we can pursue spiritual insights in our own home, as close as our fingertips. This is a marvellous opportunity, especially for those who are hyperspaced.
  • As a result faith and life mingle at all hours of the night. We acknowledge that more and more Christians in this new millennium will worship in virtual congregations, held only together by the internet screen.

The Redemptorist motto is that with God "there is plentiful redemption".

This means that no matter what your story, mistakes, history or passions God awaits your call. This we believe is the truth of the Gospels. God yearns to fill us with inner peace and remove that which numbs and hurts us. God offers plentiful love and not just virtual love. This love is to be experienced, celebrated and rejoiced in. While cyberspace can virtually give you this experience, it doesn't go all the way.

The Redemptorists' conviction is that information is not the same as religious experience.

The internet offers sight and some sound.

Redemptorist mission work leads people to experience taste, scent, sound of song, and touching and embracing on sacred occasions. It is a plentiful experience and not just virtual.

REDEMPTORIST MISSIONS ARE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE REDEMPTORISTS WORK
Thus in Redemptorist spirituality Sunday, retreat time and mission time are so important. We have received the gift of God's rest (Sabbath) that refreshes us after our labours and enables us to access deep inner well-springs from which fresh creative expectations arise.
